✢ The Character
Character Name: Alucard (real name Adrian Farenheights Țepeș)
Fandom: Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Canon Point: post-game
Age: Alucard's age is never really specified, it's known that he was born in the 15th centuary (the first time he's seen chronologically is 1450) so he is probably around 562 years old, maybe slightly older as he looks like a man in his late teens in his first appearance... let's say he's 582.

Appearance: Alucard is a tall, slender man who dresses in dark clothing typical of the era. He has long, wavy pale hair, often depicted to be silver but in reality is much closer to an almost translucent blond. He has pale skin and fierce gold/yellow eyes and in-game is often noted for his preternatural beauty and grace.

Abilities / Powers:
  • Dark Magic: Although Alucard can more than hold his own physically, it is magically where he is truly dangerous. Like his father, Alucard can use many types of dark magic, it can be said that his powers is at least 1/2 of what Dracula's is, since Dracula trained him personally. Alucard mastered most of Dracula's own attacks such as Hellfire, Dark Metamorphosis, Tetra Spirit, and Soul Steal.
  • Shapeshifting: Alucard can shapeshift into a wolf, bat, and mist to get to certain areas. With the aid of some relics, Alucard can enhance his shapeshifting, his Wolf form can ran faster than a bullet, his Form of Mist can become a Poison Cloud, and his Bat form can fire fireballs and a destructive sonar. It is speculated that Alucard, like Dracula, has a 'final form' that he can transform into, but he refuses to use it as he does not want to be like Dracula in any way; this is supported by the fact that at random, Alucard will turn into a massive gargoyle statue when petrified, which is impervious to damage; this may be his "final form." However, if this is true, there is no way to use the form in-game.
  • Speed: He can run faster than a bullet both in his human and wolf form.
  • Summoning: Alucard can summon many creatures via Relic Cards, such as an assisting fairy, an elemental spear-wielding demon, a fireball-shooting bat, a soul-stealing ghost or a powerful sword.
  • Swordsman skills: Alucard mastered a variety of weapons, but none as he mastered his mother's sword. Seeing as the sword is a family heirloom, Lisa could have come from a lineage of swordsmasters or knights. He also inherited the Alucard Shield that improves defence against all attacks, the Alucard Armor that improves Fire, Ice and Thunder elemental defence, and the Dragon Helmet that scares enemies and lowers their defenses. The Twilight Cloak, from his father, Alucard increases defense and reduces flinching.*
Inventory: Alucard carries with him his clothing, his sword (a one-handed sword aptly named "Alucard Sword"), a simple gold chained necklace with an Ankh on it which he wears around his neck under his clothing, he has all of the relics needed for his "magic" and a small collection of food wrapped in a clean cloth (an apple, a wedge of cheese and two raw mushrooms).

Personality: Alucard can come across as a cold and unemotional sort of man. He has struggled with his human and vampire nature and at times his analytical way of thinking and his pessimistic tendencies can lead others to think that he is dismissive or even uncaring. He also often over-thinks things (actions and/or words) which can result in him seeming aloof or disconnected from the world, the truth of the matter is is that he's actually quite concerned with how others view him. His mother's terrible death (being persecuted as a witch until she was caught and burnt) leads him to be wary of what others think of him, which results in Alucard thinking too hard about how to present himself.

Another element of Alucard that stems from this desire to not be perceived as a threat is his overly sensitive nature. He's very easily offended by thoughtless comments (whether those comments refer to humans, vampires or anything). As he takes such care to not offend others he finds it extremely discourteous for others to disregard others feelings. Alucard feels so strongly about this that he will often go to the aid of others who he feels are being persecuted or singled out - for he knows all too well what it feels like to be isolated from the norm.

In the same way that Alucard might feel obligated to aid someone in need, he also has very high moral standards to the point where he has a somewhat inflated sense of justice. Alucard has difficultly in seeing what most would consider as "morally grey" areas, in his mind there is simply right and wrong - which is why he judges himself in his cursed dhampir nature to be so innately evil.

Throughout his appearances in Castlevania Alucard makes an effort to keep his distance from other characters, which might again lead some to believe that he's recluse, thinks less of men or wants nothing to do with them. All of these assumptions, however, are completely wrong. Alucard deeply desires to make meaningful connections with others, he wants friends and companions, but he doesn't allow himself this luxury. He is so convinced that the sinful nature of his birth would taint any relationship to the point of destruction that he chooses against socialising with others, and the very idea of having a relationship with someone else terrifies him for the reason that he is convinced that he will, at some point, make a mistake and damage that bond. That said, there was one woman with whom he did have a strong bond with and that was his mother. He adored her and admired a lot of her human qualities. Qualities such as mercy, kindness and empathy, that have been passed down to Alucard himself unknowingly to him.

As focused as Alucard may be there are moments, even at his grand age, where he can come across as somewhat childish. His secluded lifestyle has resulted in him being quite naive about what some would consider to be the more integral facts of life. He has very little experience of modern culture, romance or even the way in which vampires (and perhaps dhampirs) are perceived. As a result, any romantic advances or compliments either go over his head or result in extreme awkwardness. At times Alucard may appear almost innocently curious, especially when it comes to matters of magic or lore, and this inquisitive nature really flourishes when he is alone (or thinks he is alone) as he prefers that others do not know what he takes interest in.

Alucard's dhampir nature and longevity might lead others to think that his strength means he has no fears or weaknesses, this is, however, quite far from the truth. Alucard has a plethora of things that scare him, the most debilitating of these fears by far is the fear of his father. As a child he saw what his mother's death did to Dracula, how it changed him from a quiet (but somewhat benevolent) overlord into a barbaric tyrant, bent of revenge against all mankind. Alucard fears this transformation as he knows that the power to turn, like his father did, is potentially in him too. As he grows and his abilities mature there are moments where he sees himself resembling his father in battle and Alucard dreads the eventuality that he might turn into his father, the man he himself had to slay to rid the world of evil. Besides this deep-rooted fear of evil Alucard does have an affliction similar to hydrophobia, he cannot cope with being submerged in water (he panics hideously). This fear relates back to his father telling tales of how previous vampire kin used to die when they came in contact with water. Conversely, despite what many may think about dhampirs, Alucard is not affected by any Christian symbology, in fact, if any cared to ask him what he believed he would probably reply that he believed in the Christian methodology.

As far Alucard's future plans go, on the surface he simply says that he wants to return to his eternal slumber, to rid the world of his cursed bloodline, but delve a little deeper and there are some more significant hopes and dreams locked away deep in his heart. He has a longing for company, not necessarily of the romantic sort but simply of friends or loved ones, people he could feel comfortable around and maybe, more importantly, people who could accept his half vampiric nature. His curious nature also means he has a thirst for knowledge, and ideally he'd love to study a variety of subjects academically (for example art history, theosophy and literature) but he doesn't believe that he'll ever have the time for this. Ultimately, however, Alucard's strongest and deepest wish is simply to belong somewhere, either as a vampire or a human (although his preference would certainly be towards the world of men). To him, this is an impossible dream but he holds it in his subconscious, waiting for some day in the future when he'll find a "home".

History:
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse

In 1476 when Trevor Belmont was on his own quest to hunt out the Count Dracula who had controlled his son to become evil, Alucard would be waiting for Trevor Belmont to come by. Alucard acted like a boss (not a real boss) at this point, testing the skills of the hero. Alucard was surprised by Trevor's strength when he was defeated and asked if he could join Trevor on his quest.

If you accept his offer, he then becomes one of the four playable characters in the game.

After helping to destroy Dracula, and despite his good intentions, Alucard couldn't help but feel guilty for patricide. To ease his pain, he put himself to rest, submerging his powers.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Alucard rises in 1797.

In 1797, due to an unexpected lack of a Belmont, Alucard had no choice but to awaken from his slumber to investigate the matter and infiltrate Castlevania. He was able to find out that Richter Belmont had been seduced by evil and was controlling the castle.

With the help of Richter's sister-in-law, Maria Renard, they were able to find out the truth: The dark priest Shaft was controlling Richter and wanted to raise Dracula from his dark slumber. After releasing Richter from Shaft's control, Alucard entered an upside-down version of Castlevania, with more powerful enemies, and confronted Shaft.

Having defeated Shaft, Alucard discovered that his efforts were in vain, as Shaft's plan had come to fruition regardless. He solely defeated his father in combat once more, and sent him back to the grave, though Dracula did show a spark of humanity after Alucard told him Lisa's last words: that mankind should be left in peace, and that she would always love him. He then planned to put himself back at rest but Maria, who had developed a strong attraction to him, eventually set out to convince him to stay.**

First Person Sample: [ As the video image slowly shifts to focus on a preternatually pale countanance, two golden orbs shift into perfect, dark spheres staring directly into the small red bulb next to the camera's lense. The expression seems unshifting, like that of a marble statue, siblime in its symetry. Silence captures the image like an ancient oil painting when at last those narrow lips move to speak as the eyes remain unshifting. ]

I am unaccustomed to waking in a bed.

[ Another momentary pause. His voice is solemn and unchanging, deep and slow. ]

If this perchance does reach someone, kindly inform me where my coffin has been placed.

My thanks.

[ And just as quickly as he appeared on the screen, he disappears again. ]

Third Person Sample: How much blood stained those gloves, Alucard wondered disdainfully as he stared down at his open palms. The silvery black that once glistened now resembled centuries-old rust more than buffed leather. How odd, he thought it, that those hands of his had never once shook. Alucard knew how common it was for mens' hands to shake under strain or pressure or even fear. And now, when he felt more consumed by those emotions than ever before, he still couldn't see a single tremor in a single finger.

But was now the time for fear? His objective and his one, burning desire had finally come to fruition and his final goal completed. The one thing he had awoken to do was now done. But there was a hollowness in this victory as he pried his glassy eyes from those stained, leather palms to see the remnants of his father's corpse.

The Vampire King Is Dead!

The words echoed in his head now, which felt so void of purpose that the words themselves seemed to reverberate in his skull like a violent pounding. Alucard knew that this moment would come, he lived to rid the world of his father's cursed blood, but now that it was finally done a horrible thought occurred to him and in the dead silence of Dracula's throne room he whispered solemnly to himself.

"... What is to become of me?"

And for a single moment he waited in vain as if someone would step out of the shadows to comfort him in his actions. Tell him that he had done the right thing in destroying his maker. Those words fell empty in empty chambers and all at once Alucard remembered himself, that if he were to be the last shred of that evil in this world then he would have to come to an end too, and unable to bring himself to fall on his blade he knew that now he had to return to the solitude of his coffin.

Forever.

Other: It's worth noting that if Alucard is submerged in water in game then he slowly starts to die (and this isn't after a short period of time being in the water, as though he was holding his breath). I like to think that this is to do with the old Hammer Horror Dracula in which Dracula is killed by being dropped into water, and so, I think that Alucard has a weakness to being underwater (to the point where it may even be a phobia).
